Community Electrification

Community Energy Movement: Electrify Bouddi

More than 100 communities across Australia are driving grassroots energy transitions – electrifying homes, cars and appliances in ways that are affordable, shared and locally led.

On the Bouddi Peninsula in New South Wales, residents are sharing strategies, expertise and stories, to help make the shift. Electrify Bouddi identifies reputable suppliers and shares practical advice. For example, how to rewire hot water systems to heat during the day using solar rather than using off-peak coal-fired power at night.

Susan Biggs is one of many showing what’s possible – rooftop solar, induction cooking, heat pump for hot water, EV charging at home. Others, like Cathi Ogden and Sharyn Smith, are part of a growing network of neighbours making informed choices of rooftop solar.

Young families like Ella’s are part of it too. They got an energy audit and through Electrify Bouddi found a member who allows them to charge their EV at lunchtime from their solar panels – for free.

Community planning and education sessions, laptops on tables, backyard catchups, are all part of what local energy transition looks like.
