Clean Power from Waste

Brendan Fraser at LGI

At Eastern Creek in Western Sydney, LGI is busy constructing the latest addition to its network of landfill gas-to-energy systems.

The organic matter in municipal, commercial, industrial, construction and demolition waste decomposes and releases methane gas.  Over a 20-year period it traps 84 times more heat in the atmosphere than the same amount of carbon dioxide. By collecting this gas and using it to generate power, LGI prevents these damaging emissions while supplying much needed renewable energy back into the electricity grid.

LGI partners with councils and landfill owners under long-term agreements, offering environmental benefits (including carbon credits) with commercial returns. It’s a quietly effective solution and one of the best short-term actions to limit warming – an invisible gas being turned from a liability into a climate solution by equipment and systems also invisible to the public.
